Policing in America

How do you feel about policing in America ?  Have you ever had interactions with the police ?  Was it negative or positive ?  Tell viewers your story about your interactions with the police.

I have been noticing an ever growing number of videos of some horrific interactions with police lately.   There are several YouTube channels that focus on nothing but police mistreating the public.  As an example, watch this video and when you’re done let me know if this is representative of far too many police officers of late.  Or, is this an isolated incident that has been blown out of proportion.  This is the video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp-KMTW2YKU

I’m not quite sure how anyone can view this video and conclude that this was acceptable behavior on the part of the officers involved.  The citizen has initiated a lawsuit against the department and the officers involved, time will tell if the courts agree that this was inappropriate behavior on the part of the officers involved.

Since the Supreme Court’s decision of Terry v. Ohio which introduced a new tool for the police to justify just about any actions they take during an encounter with a citizen, namely in the name of “Officer Safety”.   In short the decision states that if an officer “feels” (i.e. reasonable suspension) they are in danger from the citizen, they may take whatever action they deem necessary to place them in handcuffs, search their person, and/or vehicle, OR, the same for any occupants in the car, then place them in the back of the patrol car until their investigation is complete.   This decision seems to fly in the face of a citizen’s fourth amendment right of unreasonable searches and seizures.

There is a well know saying… “back the blue – until it happens to you”.   Many folks are extremely supportive of the police, but since the advent of the personal cell phone, many are changing their minds about such blanket support due to the significant numbers of police being video recorded doing some very unprofessional things.  Many officers have been either forced to resign, or in the most extreme cases indicted and jailed as a result of their unprofessional actions.  There is another popular saying… “power corrupts, and absolute power absolutely corrupts”.

Also, Many will state that although there may be a few "bad apples" in police forces across America, but the "majority" are good, folks need to understand that in many of the incidents cited in this article, there were several other officers involved with the citizen interaction... and none of them stepped in to curtail the inappropriate behavior.  If officers are there to "serve and protect", then they have an obligation to step in and stop any immediate unprofessional and unconstitutional behavior of their fellow officers.  So, although any given incident may have only one officer abusing a citizen, they are ALL as guilty if they refuse (or cover up) any wrongdoing.

Additionally... think there are only a "few" bad cops... check this link out.  https://giglio-bradylist.com/index.php/  this is "The BRADY List".  Yes, there is actually a listing of cops who's previous behavour and/or actions make them unsuitable to testify in court.  To ensure fair trials the Supreme Court of the United States created the Brady doctrine obligating the prosecutor of every case to gather and disclose all information about any individual upon whose testimony they will rely.

The Brady List is the definitive public-facing platform of record for information about police misconduct, decertification, public complaints, use-of-force reports, do-not-call listings [Giglio letter], and more potential impeachment disclosures.  "Giglio Policy" : https://www.justice.gov/archives/ag/policy-regarding-disclosure-prosecutors-potential-impeachment-information-concerning-law  Giglio v. United States, 405 U.S. 150 (1972) https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/405/150/

Just a note... if you think a judge (or Law Enforcement Officer) has violated laws or someone's constitutional rights... you can file a complaint. In your chosen web browser, simply enter the search term "giglio-bradylist" or simply "Brady List" (or click this link: https://giglio-bradylist.com/index.php/ and you will see the Brady List site. At the top-left of the page you will see the words "File a Complaint: Officer Prosecutor Judge. Select the one that suites your needs and file the complaint (it can be anonymous, but be specific on the details) . I can't guarantee anything will come of the complaint, but its more likely than not that multiple complaints will likely get some attention. (Click graphic to enlarge)

Watch a few of these videos listed below and decide for yourself if you think policing in America needs an overhaul.  And by overhaul I don't mean "defund".  We need a good police force in this country, but we need them to act appropriately.  All police officers swear under oath to uphold the constitution, and we need them to abide by that oath.

https://youtu.be/tFGpENWHbvI?si=2m58IDnoi7XkGKBi  This one is truly disgusting !   Cops abuse a handicap man who was trying to buy a bike at Target. Lawsuit likely incoming on this one.  Cop fired and charges are pending.  Other cops involved just let it happen and not so much as any disciplinary action was taken for them standing by and letting this happen…cops covering for cops... the "Thin Blue Line" crap.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/09/27/california-deputies-suspended-psychological-exams/10443703002/ In a recent mandatory audit, 47 California deputies who were hired in spite of failed psychological exams, were stripped of their guns and duties, and will be forced to retake the tests.  Someone had to die before this was discovered.  Where else is this happening where it hasn't been discovered yet ?   Perhaps better hiring procedures would reduce many of the instances of disgusting and tyrannical actions by cops.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChMvzsaNiJ4&t=37s Just when you think cops can’t get any more disgusting than you have already seen… along comes this video.  Just think, these are the types of cops that ride around in cars that profess to “Protect and Serve”.  I didn’t see much Protecting and Serving in this video… did you ?

There are literally hundreds more of videos like these few listed above.  A simple search on YouTube will reveal the the extent of the problem.
